The Rub' al Khali
"I knew instinctively that it was the very hardness of life in the desert which drew me back there..It was the same pull which takes men back to the polar ice, to high mountains and to the sea...in those empty wastes I could find the peace that comes with solitude, and, among the Bedu, comradeship in a hostile world." - Sir Wilfred Thesiger, 1959
Escape Civilization!
The daunting, inhospitable terrain of Rub' al Khali has amazed intrigued and inspired many explorers. It is the largest area of continuous sand in the world (650,000 square km, and wow! That’s an area bigger than France!), spread mostly in Saudi Arabia and then Yemen, Oman and the UAE. It is one of the driest regions in the world, virtually uninhabited, and is largely unexplored with vast reserves of petroleum beneath its sands
For us though, Rub' al Khali offers one of the most unique outdoor camping in the world. Our Rub' al Khali specialist is an expert in his navigational skills. He is a reservoir of information on Bedouin life as he was born as a nomadic boy and grew up traveling between the mountains and the deserts of Oman. That makes him an ideal companion on our Rub' al Khali exploration, bringing knowledge, safety and security to your travel experience.
So why not visit the excavations in Ubar and also see some of those frankincense tress on the way?
